Grant Gambling!!! Or is it a gamble?
The Christian, and Gambling.
17 plus years ago, I had a Word for one of my spiritual sons of the faith, regarding Tithing. He was transgressing in that area, and his finances where suffering. I really had no idea about this, so it was very surprising to him when I revealed what the Lord had given me to tell him… That’s where our relationship began. Today he is a very successful man, and an effective soul winner. I’m so proud of him and expect nothing but the best of success & fruitfulness in his life!
Now I have a Word for spiritual sons, daughters, or even just family in Christ for that matter…! For those of you who may not know me. I’m a sola scriptura type person. So, if someone intends on teaching me something, I will require that they teach using the Bible as the Supreme authority. And of course, I will also use the scriptures as my Supreme source of truth and teaching indefinitely!
Before we delve into what the scripture has to say about this topic, First I want to elaborate on a few things that should be becoming of a Christian. We all know that a Christian is, by definition, a person who is Christ like. Let me ask you, could you go into a casino and envision Jesus there at a slot machine, or a poker table? Come on admit it. Your witness would be terribly slurred if you have been preaching the gospel to the lost and then they see you in a casino doing something other than eating at the buffet table…! Let’s be truthful. If your friends on Facebook, see more posts about your gambling habits then they do about your evangelism efforts or moments of leading someone to Christ wouldn’t that tell you that that person is either backslidden or they have a terrible rift in their spiritual walk with Christ? I think it’s pretty safe for me to rest my case in this area of the conversation. Now let’s begin with the biblical teaching.
I believe that the Word of God is the perfect infallible inerrant source of absolute truth of all time! Although the culture of this day and age is vastly different from Bible times, Gods’ character and His word has not changed and never we’ll. We should always thrive to discern and put to practice god’s word in totality as it is applicable for this day and age, and it certainly is!
The Bible is absolutely silent about gambling in the sense that we think of it in today’s culture. They only saying in the Bible that remotely looks like gambling would be found where they cast lots. Which is kind ‘a like dice. They did so as a means of determining the mind of God at certain times. (Lev, 16:7-10; Jonah, 1:7; Ac, 1: 24-26) In ancient Israel it was assumed that God was in control of the dice and that he would speak to his people this way. Although there is no such thing as luck and God is in control of everything, when somebody takes money that belongs to God (because everything we have belongs to God) And Betts it on the turn of a roulette wheel or a hand of poker, that person is, in a sense, saying, “God, I am forcing You now to show Yourself. You must make my hand of cards be dealt perfectly or You must make that ball go into the hole that I bet on, because I am a Christian. “When you assume such activity and act like that, you are putting the Lord to the test. you are tempting God and that is a sin!!! (Deut, 6:16)
When somebody pushes a stack of chips onto a poker table to bet Gods money on whether the next card will be red, or a 10, or whatever, he is asking for trouble…! He is saying by his actions, “God, I am risking Your money and my faith on the fact that You are going to permit me certain cards.” Tempting God in such away is totally wrong and no Christian should ever do so. Anyone who has been a Christian for even a short amount of time should know better period…!
Gambling can even destroy a person, becoming an obsession and compulsion just like alcoholism or drugs. The habitual gambler ruins his family and his life! And many people steal from banks and businesses in order to get money for gambling. It becomes a disease that has destroyed literally 10s of thousands of people. A bondage if you will! The Lord Jesus Christ said that He came to set the captives free. (Jn, 8:36), says, “…If the Son therefore shall make you free, Ye shall be free indeed!”
Pervasive gambling poisons the minds of so-called Christians and teaches both them, and other people that fame, success, and fortune are available without work or struggle. A roll of the dice, a turn of a card, the spin of the wheel, the run of a horse, the drawing of a lottery number… All such thing like this are held out as the way to riches. The virtues of industry, thrift, careful investment, and patience or all undermined by this vice. And their place come human greed, lust, avarice, sloth, and a live for the moment mentality. How tragic to see the legislatures of sovereign states linking their burglary futures to legalize gambling and lotteries that only feed demons and will undermine the very vir
